SAR programmes in JAXA: from JERS-1 to the future
نویسنده
چکیده
The author introduces the status of the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency’s synthetic aperture radar (SAR) programmes and their scientific returns from the last 20 years of activity. The Earth observation programme was started using active microwave sensors in the early 1990s. Spaceborne SAR aboard Japanese Earth Resource’s Satellite-1 (JERS-1) was the pathfinder, and airborne polarimetric and interferometric SAR followed. The Advanced Land Observing Satellite will be launched to carry PALSAR as a follow-up high-resolution, high-performance SAR.

K&C Science Report – Phase 1
Using JERS-1 and PALSAR radar images provided by JAXA, we built regional and continental scale mosaics of Sahara that allowed to discover major geological features. The unique capability of L-band SAR to map subsurface structures in arid areas revealed several impact craters and paleo-rivers in
متن کاملGeneration of Decadal Global High Resolution L-band Sar Dataset for Forest Carbon Tracking
Recently, the forest observation using the spaceborne sensor becomes a top issue in the carbon monitoring. Covering more than 20% of the global terrestrial areas, forests are rapidly decreasing, corresponding to 20% carbon dioxide release from the land. Deforestation and forest degradation mainly occurred in the developing country. L-band SAR is sensitive for monitoring the forest biomass, fore...
متن کاملGeneration of 10m Resolution PalSAR and JERS-SAR Mosaics and Forest/Non-Forest Maps For Forest Carbon Monitoring
The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) has produced the world's first 10m resolution L-band SAR global mosaic datasets. These data sets were generated to monitor forest changes from the 1990s to present time. SRTM-3 (90m resolution) DEM was used for correct for terrain-induced SAR image variations and for ortho-rectification. Both corrections were applied for geometric and radiometric ca...
متن کاملAn L-band geophysical model function for SAR wind retrieval using JERS-1 SAR
An L-band geophysical model function is developed using Japanese Earth Resources Satellite-1 (JERS-1) synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data. First, we estimate the SAR system noise, which has been a serious problem peculiar to the JERS-1 SAR. It is found that the system noise has a feature common in all the SAR images and that the azimuth-averaged profile of noise can be expressed as a parabolic ...

ABSTRACT: The author compared the capability of coherence information obtained from interferometric SAR (InSAR) by C-band SAR of ERS-1 and 2 and by L-band SAR of JERS-1 for the purpose of monitoring the changes of tropical rain forest due to deforestation. The test site was a southern part of Sumatra Island with 50 by 50 kilometers coverage. The several repeat-pass interferometric data pairs by...
